The 1990s were another decade of change for Preston, with many more buildings being demolished, but new ones taking their place. The frontage may look the same, but Primark now sits where Marks and Spencer once did. This is the redevelopment of the Cartwright Mansion, on Fishergate, Preston in July 1990. Only the facade of the original building remains having been incorporated into the new store front of Marks & Spencer. This property was originally the home of William Cartwright, resident engineer of the Lancaster Canal. He built the house in 1802. This building may look familiar to many of you, and it should. It was formerly Moss Cottage on Fylde Road, Preston and was the former surgery of Dr. Henry Walmsley who began his practice here in 1873. The surgery closed in June 1987. The property has since been converted to The Guild pub and makes a very fine statement as you enter the city centre along Fylde Road.
