Learn more about Wyre University of the Third Age

With more than 40 different groups with subjects ranging from gardening to going travelling, there really is something for everyone involved in the Wyre U3A - all 400 of them.

The popular group - part of the national University of the Third Age organisation -currently boasts more than 400 members but is always on the look out for people to join at Thornton Little Theatre.

It’s one of more than 800 U3As across the country and world wide and is aimed at people no longer in full time employment who share a love of learning and who want to keep active in mind and body.

Kathleen Smith, speaker’s secretary of Wyre U3A, said: “It isn’t a school or college where you sit exams. It is where we all share knowledge and experience.

“I have, yet, to leave any group meeting without learning something I had not known before.

“Sometimes that can be about something, someone or, even, myself.

“One thing is certain, we all make new friends and have a good time.”

Kathleen, from Marton, added: “We have a great membership of about 400 and we have about 40 different interest groups, which cover an amazing variety of subjects - from languages to travel, art appreciation to painting, history to current affairs, book and play reading to creative writing, walking to music playing, theatre visits to gardening and the list goes on.”

“We have speakers such as last week which was about how farming has changed and a gentleman who is coming to talk about Nat King Cole

“And new groups are being formed all the time.”

There is a monthly meeting, held at the Thornton Little Theatre on the second Thursday of every month, at 2pm, where members and visitors, get updates from the committee and group leaders. There is also a speaker in the second half of the meeting. Annual membership costs £10 .
