Lancaster shoplifter jailed after threatening staff and breaching sex offender rules

A Lancaster man has been jailed after carrying out a series of shop thefts shortly after being released from prison and breaching his sex offender notification requirements.

James Dobson, 23, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to five months in prison at Lancashire Magistrates’ Court on Monday, December 15, 2025.

The court heard that Dobson had been released from prison on December 1 but went on to commit two thefts from shops in Lancaster city centre soon afterwards.

During one of the incidents, Dobson threatened to assault a shopkeeper.

Dobson also failed to remain in contact with police as required under the conditions of the sex offenders register.

PC 8794 Smith from Lancashire Police’s Neighbourhood Policing Team said officers have a “zero tolerance” approach to shoplifting and abuse towards retail workers.

“We are working tirelessly through Operation Vulture to target these individuals and their unacceptable behaviour,” PC Smith said.

Police applied for a Criminal Behaviour Order (CBO) to be issued alongside his prison sentence. The court agreed, imposing a three-year order.

The CBO prohibits Dobson from entering any shop within Lancaster city centre and bans him from entering any Spar, Aldi or B&M store anywhere in Lancashire.

“This will go some way to minimise Dobson's offending behaviour once he is released from prison,” a spokesman for Lancashire Police added.
