A variety of talent among Chorley's Golden Generation

To help shout out about what’s on, the group of retired and semi-retired proudly presented their newest venture, the formation of a variety performance group with a dedicated show ‘Generation Gold.’

The amateur performers entertained a 100-strong audience with the performance at St George’s Church Hall in Halliwell Street.

And the group showed off their talents with an action-packed programme of music, singing, dancing and comedy.

Retired sales manager and spokesperson Paul William says: “There was something for everyone – and it was all written, staged and performed by the group.

“The U3A photography group were invited to record the event by taking photographs at both the dress rehearsal and the actual performance.

“Nine members from the Photography Group were delighted to use this as an opportunity to gain new experience and they took pictures to make an archive for the members of the variety performance group.”

Video recordings were also made of the performance.

The new variety group is led by Eleanor Nelson who performed in ‘Generation Gold’ alongside her 94 year old mother, Joan.

Paul adds: “Take a leaf from Joan’s book of life and don’t let retirement slow you down or prevent you from making new friends.

“A warm welcome will await you at any meeting or activity. You can learn a new language, develop new skills, brush up on an old hobby or take part in something more energetic like walking, gardening and bowling.

Chorley’s U3A is a group of retired and semi-retired people who meet regularly to take part in learning, leisure and physical activities.

Each one of the “special interest groups” is led by a volunteer who has the knowledge and patience to encourage other people to take part in this activity.”

The U3A offers a diverse range of activities and courses from art appreciation to card making, walking group to yoga and musical appreciation. With the help of keen photographer Paul was founded a few years ago and has between 25 and 30 members enjoying the monthly get-togethers, regular competitions and days out across Lancashire

Paul says: “We are very pleased the way it (the group) has grown - in a short time members have been taking better pictures, are more involved in photography, asking more questions and keen to develop their skills.

Paul has enjoyed photography for more than 30 years and, as a member of the Leyland photographic society, the Bolton Digital group and of The Lancashire & Cheshire Photographic Union, he was happy to share his knowledge and experience with those with an interest.

He adds: “A lot of the members within the snappers are involved with other groups of the U3A – there’s a lot of overlapping and a hobby for everyone.

Chairman of the U3A Lily Maltman adds: “We are a self-help voluntary organisation of retired and semi-retired men and woman meeting to take part in learning, leisure and physical activities.
