Giving us a glimpse of life in Preston back in 1950, these are some of our best archive pictures of the city back at the halfway point of the 20th century, depicting scenes of everyday life which just go to show how much things have changed over the subsequent 73 years.

Syke Street, Avenham, Preston c.1950 To the left, behind the wall, is the former premises of Preston Gas Works. Just right of centre is the entrance to Old Cock Yard. The River Syke, culverted since 1812 runs directly below the photographer. This watercourse will eventally find it's way west, passing below the subway at Preston Railway Station and discharge into the Ribble at the bottom of Fishergate Hill. Photo: PDA

Shepherd Street Mission, Preston c.1950 The first building to house the Dr. Shepherd Library, erected in 1797. In 1850 the library was moved to a room of the Harris Institute, at Avenham. From here it was transferred in 1879 to the old premises of the Literary and Philosophical Institution at the corner of Cross Street. Later it was incorporated in the Harris Reference Library, at the time when the Harris Library and Art Gallery was erected. Shepherd Street derives its name from the Library.
