This is when major roadworks will begin to improve bottleneck junction in heart of Leyland
A major overhaul for a notorious Leyland road junction has been revealed.
Lancashire County Council has confirmed that from Monday, March 16, work to improve the Tiger Junction in Leyland - where Golden Hill Lane, Longmeanygate and Leyland Lane converge - will begin.
The work will continue until June 6, with temporary traffic lights to be installed in the area. The severity rating - linked to disruption in the area - is given as “high”.
What’s the problem?
The four-way signalised junction causes traffic jams many times a day, on busy roads close to Leyland town centre. The narrow junction also means that cars turning right from Longmeanygate into Leyland Lane, and from Golden Hill Lane into Leyland Lane can cause obstructions for cars wanting to drive straight ahead.
People using mobility scooters and wheelchairs also claim the junction is a “nightmare”, saying they can’t get from Leyland Lane to Croston Road without going down Longmeanygate, and even there, it’s not straight across as the pavements do not match opposite each other.

What is being done?
Councillor Warren Goldsworthy, cabinet member for Highways and Transport at Lancashire County Council said: "The signalised junction is being upgraded to provide controlled pedestrian crossing facilities on all approaches.
"The scheme also includes targeted carriageway widening and the removal of existing splitter islands to improve overall traffic flow.
"These improvements will increase junction capacity, including an extended right‑turn lane for vehicles turning into Leyland Lane from Golden Hill.
"These upgrades are fully funded by the developer linked to the Leyland Test Track development with no cost to the county council."

Response
The work has been welcomed by local people on social media, albeit with some trepidation over the disruption.
One person said “it’s going to be a pain”, but looked forward to improved crossings, while others said the work will not prevent people jumping red lights - which leaves people waiting in the middle of the road to turn into Golden Hill Lane.
