Leyland schoolboy 'truly shocked' to receive Young Citizen Award
A Leyland schoolboy has received a prestigious award, recognising the positive impact he makes in the local community and beyond.
Alfie Edgar, a Year 11 pupil at Academy @ Worden, received a commended certificate at this year’s High Sheriff of Lancashire Young Citizen Awards after being nominated by members of the community.
The annual awards celebrate young people - aged 19 or under - in Lancashire who have made a real difference to either their local neighbourhood, an individual, family member or a local organisation.
Alfie has taken part in numerous fundraising activities, volunteered his time to support local initiatives, and regularly engages in projects designed to help those in need. Leaders at his school said he is ‘widely admired for his genuine kindness and thoughtfulness’.

A spokesperson for the Academy @ Worden continued: “Alfie’s achievement reminds us of the power of compassion, community spirit, and determination.
“His award is not only a celebration of his hard work but also an inspiration to other young people, showing the remarkable things that can be achieved when kindness leads the way. We extend our warmest congratulations to Alfie on this well-deserved honour.
“His contribution to society has made his school, community, and family immensely proud, and we look forward to seeing the continued impact he will make in the future.
Alfie was among 40 fantastic young people nominated for their local impact, with 15-year-old Lucie Grove from Preston being awarded the overall Young Citizen of the Year title.
Millie Rooney, 18, from Burnley was runner-up in the 2026 awards and Leon Molloy, 16, from Preston, earned third place.
Speaking about receiving his certificate, Alfie said: “I was truly shocked when I received this award as I don't do it for all the praise - I do it to support people in our local community.”
James Carter DL, High Sheriff of Lancashire said: “Lancashire has a fabulous record of people undertaking essential voluntary work. As a great advocate for our young people, it makes me very proud to see the next generation of community minded volunteers showing their dedication and sacrifice.
“They should all be congratulated and I wish also to give a huge thank you to those who have made the effort to nominate them.”
