Ice, Guinness and pet food are just some of the hilarious ways Chorley residents are using their new food waste caddies from Chorley Council.

A new weekly food waste collection service has started across Chorley and residents are coming up with hilarious ways of making use of it.

It is part of the national requirement for local authorities to start collecting leftover, unwanted and out-of-date food separately to general household rubbish.

The first food waste pick-ups will take place in the week commencing yesterday - and will then be made weekly thereafter - on the same day as the other bins are collected.

Every household should already have received a free starter pack, which includes:

  • A 7‑litre kitchen caddy.
  • A 23‑litre outdoor food waste caddy with a secure, lockable lid.
  • Two rolls of kitchen caddy liners.
  • An information leaflet.

Some of the inventive ways people are making use of them include storing pet food, flower pots and as a drinks cooler.

One person said that ice and Guinness would be going in theirs for the summer, while another joked that they would be using theirs as a new suitcase.

One person hilariously joked: “We’re one colour-coded bin away from putting ourselves out for collection at this rate.”

Residents can find their collection day online at chorley.gov.uk/bincollectiondays.
