Exciting new plans revealed for rebranded Chorley country club - including driving range, padel & gym

The area is washed over by Green Belt.

A highly-rated Chorley golf and wedding venue has a new name - and exciting plans for the future.

The Laurels, off the A49 at Charnock Richard was put up for sale in 2024 for £3million - and has now been rebranded as Charnock Richard Country Club.

This week, owners have made a request to Chorley Borough Council for a screening opinion related to a proposed extension to an existing building to form a gym, the erection of a padel centre and a golf driving range.

This is a formal assessment that determines whether a proposed development requires a full Environmental Impact Assessment.

The proposed development consists of the following elements:

• Extension to the existing maintenance building to form a gym – located on the northern part of the site adjacent to the existing clubhouse, the extension to the maintenance building will provide a total footprint of 186 sq.m (including existing and proposed) with a maximum height of 6.2 metres.

• Creation of a padel court centre (with indoor and outdoor courts) – to be developed on the southern part of the site on undeveloped land associated with the golf course. The building will provide a five-court indoor padel centre with a footprint of 2,284 sq.m and roof height of up to 10.7m, together with three outdoor padel courts (612 sq.m in total).

• Creation of a golf driving range – Further to the south of the padel centre, the golf driving range will provide 22 driving range bays and associated facilities. The building would be up to 4.4m in height with ball netting between 6m and 9m in height.

• Erection of a maintenance building – Located adjacent to the driving range to accommodate bays for repairs, with a maximum height of 3.8m.

The existing access arrangements to the site, off the A49 Preston Road, would be retained. New internal access roads would be provided to allow access to the new padel centre and driving range. Additional parking would be provided to facilitate the development.

PWA Planning, on behalf of management, told Chorley Borough Council: “The proposal has been carefully designed to preserve the openness of the Green Belt, with the buildings designed to sensitivity fit their context, with the existing landscape buffers retained and new landscaping introduced to screen and soften the development.

“The proposed design will ensure that environmental constraints are fully taken into account and that potential adverse impacts are mitigated through design as far as possible. It is not therefore considered that the size and design of the development would give rise to significant environmental effects.”

Chorley Borough Council will make a decision in coming weeks.
