Astley Hall reopens West Wing after £400,000 renovation project

The West Wing of Astley Hall has reopened following a £400,000 renovation project, with visitors now able to explore more of the Grade I-listed landmark

Astley Hall is due to reopen for half-term following the completion of renovation works that have left parts of the hall closed to the public this year.

From today (Saturday), visitors will be able to explore more of the Grade I-listed landmark as the hall’s West Wing reopens following extensive works.

Alongside newly refreshed and redressed rooms, visitors will be able to enjoy the return of unique artwork and collection items, now back on display following the closure.

Coun Peter Wilson, deputy leader of Chorley Council said: “Astley Hall is one of Chorley's most important heritage attractions and although the recent renovation works and partial closure were essential, and a significant milestone in preserving the hall for future generations, we’re really looking forward to reopening the West Wing again so visitors can get the full Astley Hall experience.

“October half term provides the perfect opportunity for families to rediscover the hall while enjoying a fantastic programme of seasonal activities."

Upcoming events include October half term fun with a Curious Creatures trail and free craft workshops, rounding the week off with the popular Astley After Dark on Halloween which has already sold out.

Following half term, the Astley events calendar includes the renowned nationally touring exhibition ‘The Longest Yarn’ (14 November to 2 December), Christmas at Astley with the hall dressed in all its festive splendour by the Friends of Astley Hall and of course opportunities to meet Father Christmas in stunning historic surroundings.

The reopening of the West Wing follows a £400,000 project made possible thanks to funding from The Wolfson Foundation (£100,000), the Government’s UK Shared Prosperity Fund (£34,000) and a donation from The Friends of Astley Hall (£5,000) alongside Chorley Council’s investment, with a programme of restoration works focused on preserving and protecting the historic fabric of the building.

As well as enhancing the appearance of the exterior, the project has helped safeguard this important heritage asset for future generations while creating a more welcoming and comfortable experience for visitors.

Inside, the Stucco Bedroom and Cromwell Bedroom have been refreshed and carefully furnished to reflect life at the hall in 1852, when Lady Susannah Hoghton lived there. Visitors will be able to explore the stories of the hall through her voice, alongside those of household servants recorded on the census of that year.

The Room of Reflection has been newly curated with artworks and collection items from the Second World War, to complement the upcoming The Longest Yarn exhibition and providing further opportunities for visitors to connect with the site's history.
