41. When the chips are down these youngsters know what's cooking. Preston scouts have named their top of the shops after running their own competition to find the finest local fryer. The children from the third Lea St Peter and Pauls troop surveyed a series of local fish and chip shops. After dishing up top marks for taste and value for the money, the champion chippie title was handed to the Happy Haddock on Plungington Road. 42. Six apprentices at British Aerospace in Warton, near Preston, potted the black for charity when they rook part in a 24-hour snooker marathon. They managed to raise £700 in sponsorship and collections and will hand the cash to the NSPCC. 43. Young would-be sports stars joined in a special two-day event to promote athletics for children in Preston. The youngsters took part in the The Athletic Experience at the West View Leisure Centre. The scheme was the result of a link between the Preston Harriers Athletics Club and Preston Leisure.
