We knew we were in for a high-class performance at BJ’s Rock in the Blues Club at The Minstrel, in Eaves Green, with the brilliant Paddy Maguire Band playing to a packed house.

The West Yorkshire band features Paddy Maguire on guitar and vocals, Jenna Hooson Maguire on vocals, Jamie Mallender on bass and Sean
Fitzpatrick on drums.

They kicked off with some classic Aretha Franklin and Chain Of Fools, with Jenna laying down the rules.

Next, a great rockin’ take of Proud Mary, before slowing down the pace with Muddy Water Blues, showing Jenna’s versatility.

Nutbush City Limits was swiftly followed by the haunting Etta James classic I’d Rather Go Blind, setting a superb vocal challenge for Jenna which she was more than up to.

The second set brought Paddy to the fore on vocals, with I Want To Fly, before continuing with some classic rock in Paddy’s own style.

For the benefit of audience participation, there was then a touch of ‘guitar playing’ from Paddy on Rock Me Baby, which was simply hilarious.

And there was still time for a couple of self-penned numbers, with the beautiful Love Still Grows and a new track Red Headed Woman, which leaned towards classic rock.

Finishing off the evening was Jenna’s pièce de résistance, the Janis Joplin classic Mercedes Benz, before the set ended with a touch of soul, a great end to a great evening with a great band.

The Paddy Maguire Band are the best in blues rock and, with Jenna Hooson Maguire on amazing power vocals, they are hard to top.

We’ll definitely see them back at BJ’s next year.
