Preston Grasshoppers bid farewell to eight players

Eight senior players are leaving Preston Grasshoppers this summer.

Ed Rowell, Derek Ochieng, Asa Watson, Ged Boylan, Jonny Wild, Robbie Willetts, Owain Williams and Danny Maher are leaving the National League Two North outfit.

The players are departing for a variety of reasons, including new opportunities, retirement, travel and family commitments.

Willetts, Williams, Maher, Boylan and Wild were regular first teamers at Lightfoot Green, as Hoppers finished last season in ninth place.

Hoppers head coach Dan Orwin has saluted the contributions of the players.

Boylan returns to Sedgley Park following the end of his season-long loan spell, in which he made 14 first XV appearances.

Orwin said: “We thank Ged for his efforts and wish him well for the future.

“Having previously worked with Jonny Wild at Fylde, I dragged Jonny out of retirement in the 2024-25 season to help cover a run of injures in the front row. After answering the call to come out of retirement, Jonny is now hanging up his boots once again.”

Wild made 11 appearances in the front row last season.

Orwin added: “Robbie Willetts has decided to step away from the game following injury setbacks over the past two seasons.

“Owain Williams is leaving to join Sale FC. Since arriving midway through the 2023-24 campaign, Owain has made 30 appearances and scored 18 tries.

“His hard work and development have earned him the opportunity to play at a higher level, and everyone at Hoppers looks forward to following his progress.

“Danny Maher’s stepping away from his role at the club to focus on the launch of his new business.

“Ed Rowell temporarily heads off travelling following his graduation from Lancaster University. A key figure in the second XV in recent seasons, his attitude and commitment have been first class.

“Derrick Ochieng is moving away and Asa Watson leaves to focus on career and family.”
