Young Magpies are repaying boss Jamie Vermiglio’s faith

Jamie Vermiglio believes the results and performances from the past few weeks illustrates that his young Chorley outfit are beginning to gel together.

The Magpies boss made a number of changes ahead of this season with a number of the old guard who had served the club so well from previous seasons being allowed to leave.

In their place, Vermiglio decided to put his faith in youth as he looked to bring the average age of the squad down.

Questions were asked at the start of the season after Chorley sunk to the bottom of the National league North after losing their opening four league games.

However a remarkable run in the FA Cup which has seen the Magpies defeat League One oufits Wigan Athletic and Peterborough United to earn a third round tie at home to Derby County has certainly raised confidence within the camp.

And that has certainly been the case as Chorley have risen to mid-table after picking up three wins and three draws from their past six league games.

This week, they collected a 2-0 win at Boston United on Saturday before a superb Harry Cardwell strike on Tuesday night saw them edge past Guiseley 1-0 at Victory Park.

What has pleased Vermiglio in particular are the cleans sheets and that is down to his men becoming more familiar with one another.

“Defensively we have been really strong,” Vermiglo told Chorleytv.com

“We’ve been really organised and that’s the key thing for us, the organisation.

“I feel like they are getting to know each other a lot more and as a result the communication has improved.

“We are in together and we defend from the front and we are nice and strong with that.

“But when they do get through then we can rely on our goalkeeper Matty Urwin.”

This weekend, the Magpies travel to Alfreton Town, who are two points an three places below themk in the table.

“We have played Saturday-Tuesday now relentlessly against top sides,” he added.

“We are playing some real hign intensity games, we are getting fitter and stronger but I think you can see a little bit of tireness creeping in the legs.

“We have got Alfreton this weekend. I don’t know too much about them but I am sure they will be a typical Alfreton side which is well organised and play with lots of endeavour. Hopefully, we will be able go there and continue our run.”
