Shrimps boss rues mistakes at both ends of the pitch

Morecambe boss Ashvir Singh Johal found it hard to hide his frustration after the Shrimps fell to a 12th league defeat of the season at Braintree Town.

The home side climbed out of the National League relegation places with a 1-0 win on Saturday.

Keeper Jamal Blackman’s error proved costly as his poor pass enabled the home side to score the only goal through Goran Babic.

At the other end of the pitch, the Shrimps created a host of openings but the lack of a clinical finish proved costly.

Ben Tollitt brought an acrobatic save out of home keeper Jack Thompson, though it was Harry Panayiotou who spurned their best chance when hitting the post.

Defeat keeps Morecambe third-bottom of the table, though only three points behind 19th-placed Braintree.

Johal said: “Conceding the goal as early as we did, in the style that we did, made the game completely different to how it should have been.

“They scored a goal and, after that, made it really difficult for us but, as we got going, we created a lot of clear-cut chances.

“I am disappointed with the score, disappointed with the way we lost and disappointed that we conceded a goal from giving the ball away in our defensive third.

“I was pleased with the second-half attacking output and we had maybe six or seven clear-cut chances – and I’m disappointed we didn’t score those.

“We score two of those seven chances, one of those seven chances, three of those seven chances, and it’s a completely different game.”
