After losing the League Two play-off final against Notts County, the Ammies parted ways with Karl Robinson. Now, Ferguson - son of Manchester United icon Sir Alex - has jumped to the top of the bookies’ odds.

His fourth stint as Peterborough United manager came to an end in October of last year. Ferguson has three League One promotions and a couple of League Two promotions on his managerial CV.

He took Doncaster Rovers out of the fourth tier in 2017 and Peterborough up in 2008, with Posh’ third tier promotions coming in 2009, 2011 and 2021. PNE is the only other club Ferguson has managed - he spent January 2010 to December 2010 in the Deepdale dugout.

Should he take over at Salford, he will be the latest man tasked with taking the Class of 92 owned club into League One. It is now seven consecutive seasons in the fourth tier, with 11th, 8th, 10th, 7th, 20th, 8th and 4th placed finishes.

Blackburn Rovers look as though they have found their next manager, after Michael O’Neill’s decision to stay on board as Northern Ireland boss - instead of taking the job full time at Ewood Park.

Dave Challinor, whose time at Stockport County has ended after almost five years, is said to be Blackburn-bound. The 50-year-old won 144 of his 268 games in charge of Stockport, winning two league titles, reaching three play-off campaigns and one cup final.
