Two in: Preston North End's ideal summer transfer response to Alan Browne exit
PNE looking to replace 11th all time appearance maker this summer
It was always going to be an important summer for Preston North End - and they now have a colossal servant in Alan Browne to replace. The Lilywhites are yet to land their first signing of the transfer window, which isn’t a huge problem - other Championship clubs have not done business yet and Ryan Lowe’s side only returned for pre-season on Monday. Of course, a fresh face or two would’ve been ideal, as well as a boost for the rest of the squad.

But really, it’s all about waiting for the right ones; last summer’s first recruit ended up being North End’s worst. A handful of players have been linked, director Peter Ridsdale has spoken about his discussions with four targets - and where PNE will be looking to strengthen. Confirmation on club legend Browne, based off Ridsdale’s comments, should not have sped things up too much. It was assured that deals were being worked on anyway - and would be completed if it got to that stage.
It does, though, give North End absolute clarity now. Midfield is a department that must be addressed this summer - as well as central defence and out wide. Along with Browne, Preston have lost Ben Woodburn and Lewis Leigh. Granted, they were not regular starters by any means last season, but numbers in that area of the pitch have dropped. And last campaign, PNE ended up playing Jack Whatmough in midfield against some very tough sides.
A starting three of Ben Whiteman, Ali McCann and Mads Frokjaer is more than capable - strong, in fact. Ryan Ledson and Duane Holmes provide other senior options, while youngster Noah Mawene got a taste of first team experience in 2023/24 and will want more. With top earner Browne having departed, quality, experience and leadership has been lost. But North End are said to have funds available, so PNE shouldn’t be seeking a replacement with peanuts.
Getting one through the door is paramount; getting two in would be really grabbing the opportunity - which Preston do have now - with both hands. North End are on the hunt for a first team ready midfielder and Lowe’s eye for a player hasn’t often let him down, to his credit. And the owners have backed him. There is the chance to make a statement midfield addition and sign someone who’ll have an instant impact next season.
That’s easier said than done, of course, but it has to be the profile PNE seek now. And with one eye to the future, it would be refreshing and exciting to see the Lilywhites look long-term as well. If Preston could tick the previously mentioned box, and also recruit a youngster with high potential, you would have plenty of satisfied supporters - surely. A strong midfield has always been vital to any top PNE team and finishing this summer with one has to be the goal.
