Golden boy William's world-class sporting feats

Chorley boy’s six GB medals at Biathle-Triathle-Laser Run World Championships

Super sportsman William Wiggans has returned home to Chorley with six medals, three of them gold, after representing Great Britain at the Biathle-Triathle-Laser Run World Championships in Madeira.

Ten-year-old William entered six events in a week and was the leading British boy in all of them, also winning a silver and two bronze medals.

It continued a wonderful year for William after he won nine medals, four of them gold, at this summer's European Championships on the same Portuguese island.

In the worlds, Williams helped GB to gold in the team biathle and triathle, and in the laser run relay. His best individual placing was second in the triathle to earn silver.

These three disciplines are all elements of the modern pentathlon: biathle combines running and swimming, laser run comprises running and shooting, while triathle features all three.

William, now in his final year at Westwood Primary School, trains with the North West Pentathlon Hub and proud mum Olivia told the Lancashire Post: "Pentathlon is a real up and coming sport and William loves it.

"We're so proud to see him winning medals for his country with his friends. You can see how delighted William is to help them win medals too.

"He's benefitting from top national coaching ready to get onto the Olympic Pathway. William would love to compete at the Olympics one day and he's making fantastic friends all over the country."

And his passion for the sport is shared by his parents as Olivia explained: "William competes most weekends, so we have to take him around the country. We all get to see some lovely places and we love it too."

When we spoke, the family were in Loughborough for qualifiers ahead of the national championship in March at Bath University, where William finished second this year.

William also represents Preston Harriers, Leyland Barracudas Swimming Club and Chorley Athletic and Triathlon Club.
