Chorley 5 Darlington 2: Magpies secure three points in midweek
Chorley collected three points from their game with Darlington on Tuesday.
Chorley produced an impressive attacking display as they swept aside Darlington in their National League North meeting on Tuesday night, writes PETE TSCHEREWIK.
Elliot Taylor, Warren Clarke and Jack Sampson were all on target, while Jack Hazlehurst struck twice to secure a convincing three points despite a second-half double from Darlington substitute Aidan Rutledge.
The Magpies opened the scoring after eight minutes when Adam Blakeman’s excellent diagonal ball found Max Wilson.
The move continued through to Callum Rowe, whose left-footed cross was met by Taylor who glanced his header smartly into the far corner.
Chorley doubled their advantage four minutes before the break as Wilson delivered another superb cross, this time finding Clarke at the far post with the midfielder throwing himself at the ball to head home.
The Magpies were then awarded a penalty two minutes later but Hazlehurst’s effort was saved by Bobby Jones.
However, he then produced a moment of real quality in first-half stoppage time.
Following a long throw which Darlington failed to clear, the ball dropped to the midfielder who chested it into the air before unleashing a stunning left-footed volley into the top corner.
The hosts continued their momentum after the restart and added a fourth on 55 minutes.
Jack Moore’s free-kick from halfway sent Hazlehurst through and he finished brilliantly, with a first-time effort across goal and into the far corner.
Darlington responded with two goals in five minutes, Rutledge heading home from Jonah Lowes’ corner on 75 minutes before repeating the feat from Paddy McLaughlin’s cross.
Chorley restored their three-goal cushion seven minutes later, when a misplaced clearance sent the returning Sampson through.
He calmly finished into the near corner on his return from injury.
There was still time for Rutledge to be dismissed late on after picking up two yellow cards in quick succession.
