Lancashire train passengers urged to 'check before you travel' amid 15-hour Met Office warning

Rail passengers in Lancashire are being urged to ‘check before you travel’ as a Met Office warning remains in force.

The yellow alert for strong wind is in place from 5.00am until 8.00pm today (Thursday, March 12), covering Northern England, Wales and some parts of Scotland.

The Met Office warns that wind gusts of 50-55mph are expected widely, with some coastal locations and areas downwind of high ground seeing gusts of 60mph or 70mph.

In Lancashire, the worst conditions - with heavy rain and gusts of up to 55mph - are expected from around 2.00pm. On the Fylde Coast, residents are warned of ‘very large, powerful waves’ bringing a ‘very high likelihood’ of injury in or near the sea.

As a result of the yellow warning, National Rail is urging passengers to ‘check before you travel’.

A National Rail spokesperson said: “A period of strong winds, accompanied by heavy rain, is expected with some disruption possible. Please check your entire journey before you travel.

“High winds can mean trains may have to run at slower speeds than usual to operate safely. Strong winds can also bring down trees and other debris that blocks tracks and damages power lines.”
