Motorists reported delays of over 20 minutes, with the incident causing severe delays back to junction 28 (Leyland Interchange) of the M6 and junction 9 (Clayton Brook Interchange) of the M61.

But Highways England has now confirmed all lanes have reopened and traffic has returned to normal.

A spokesman for Highways England said: "The M6 northbound J30 (Blacow Bridge Interchange M61) to J31 is now fully open."
