Remember remember the fifth of November - this year's bonfire in Garstang could be the last

Usually taking place on the Garstang Community Centre car park on the Saturday closest to November 5, the popular display could be under threat.

Potential developers would see flats replace the car park, and organisers, Garstang and District Lions Club, say it would prevent them from putting on the display and do not know where else the event could be held.

David Lewis, secretary, said: "We've been organising the event for around 10 years and it's always really popular in the town. Unfortunately its days could be numbered because if the car park is developed then it won't be possible to hold the event. We have discussed the possibility of it no longer being held on the high street car park but we can't think of anywhere else that is suitable. We usually attract nearly 1,000 people and I'd like to think it's something local people look forward to every year."

A proposed bid for the development by Blackpool-based developer Keyworker Homes would see the centre and its car park turned into a supermarket and retirement flats. A planning application has yet to be submitted for the building which is owned by Wyre Council.

David said: "This event has become something of a tradition and we would be very sad if it had to stop. It brings people together and we always see lots of smiling faces. There's always entertainment and food which makes it good for children to come along to as well. We will make sure this year's event is as good as ever."

This year's bonfire will start at 7pm on Saturday, November 7 with the fireworks starting at 7.30pm.
