But in a business sense, it has not been a bad year for Preston owner Trevor Hemmings.

The businessman has been named once again on the region’s rich list with an estimated wealth of £1bn in 2018, up a cool £150m. Mr Hemmings, a Preston born race horse and property portfolio owner, sits joint tenth in the North West’s money list.

At the top of the tree of the list compiled by the Sunday Times sits the Duke of Westminster and the Grosvenor family.

The seventh Duke of Westminster (otherwise known as Hugh Grosvenor), 27, remains the region’s richest man with a fortune of £9.964bn, which has grown by £444m in the past year alone

He became Britain’s youngest billionaire after inheriting his title on the death of his father two years ago.

Also included in the North West list are discount retail business owners Tom Morris and family (Home Bargains) and Simon, Bobby and Robin Arora (B and M).

The combined wealth of the richest 20 in the Northwest stands at £32.175bn this year with a record 11 billionaires among them.

Robert Watts, the Compiler of The Sunday Times Rich List, said: “Our Northwest Rich List is again led by the Duke of Westminster, but wealth creation in the UK is increasingly a story of self-made - rather than inherited - wealth.”
