Police say the team detonated the grenade after first moving it further away from the road for safety reasons.

The spokesperson said the police received a call at 5.30pm yesterday from a man who had let some people metal detect on a field off Preston Road at Higher Alston Farm, saying they had come across what they believed was an old hand grenade from the Second World War.

“We made the area safe last night and this morning the EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) team moved it to another field and did a controlled explosion, 200m away from the road,” she said.
