Famous Lancashire statue to be re-sited in town centre after 10 years in storage
A well-known Lancashire statue could soon be re-installed after being in storage for 10 years.
The Unknown Shopper statue was originally installed at the junction of Curzon Street and St James’s Street, Burnley, in 1994 after being commissioned by the Market Charter Steering Group to celebrate the 700th anniversary of the granting of the Market Charter by King Edward I. It was removed in 2016 as part of town centre public realm improvement works and has been kept in storage since.

Now plans have been tabled by Burnley Borough Council to re-site it on an elevated level plinth on a grassed area at the junction of Bankfield/Curzon Street/Parker Street. The proposed site was converted into a grassed public open space in 2018, following the demolition of the vehicular ramp serving the market.
The statue is approximately 1.8m high and it is proposed to install it on a 1.2m wide square plinth, that will be a maximum of 1m high from ground level. The site is a public open space owned by Burnley Borough Council and will continue to be managed by the Council’s Green Spaces team.
