This is the moment a stolen BMW crashed into a police car whilst attempting u-turn on the M6

The driver of the stolen BMW attempted a u-turn on an M6 slip road but crashed into an oncoming police car.

Officers with Lancashire Police spotted the car, which had been reported stolen in Cheshire, on the M6 near Preston on Monday (May 4).

As officers signalled for the driver to stop, the BMW attempted a hair-raising u-turn on the slip road, in the face of oncoming traffic.

The car can be seen smashing side-on into the police car, sending shards of glass from the driver's window spilling onto the carriageway.

Police said the BMW's passenger was detained at the scene, but the driver managed to run away.

However, the driver did not get very far, as the Lancashire Police Dog Unit was soon on his tail.

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police said: "This stolen BMW from Cheshire came to Lancs yesterday and upon sighting police attempted a u-turn to drive the wrong way down the M6, but was prevented by #T1TacOps.

"Passenger detained but driver ran away followed by Lancashire Police Dog Unit who tracked and detained him."
