Railway bike hub is hit by burglar

A would-be burglar broke into the bicycle hub used by passengers at Preston Railway Station.

The intruder, Robert William Towers, has been given a 16 week prison sentence after being caught in the act, but a bench at Preston Magistrates’ Court agreed to suspend the sentence for 12 months.

The 35-year-old defendant, who gave his address as Cranbourne Street, Bamber Bridge, near Preston, pleaded guilty to offences of burglary and going equipped for theft, during a brief hearing.The court heard the defendant had been found in possession of an arsenal of tools used in the act of a theft, including a set of bolt cutters, some allen keys, a screwdriver and a mallet, during the incident on June 19 last year.

Towers has been ordered to pay a £115 victim surcharge and £85 towards his prosecution costs, at a rate of £10 a fortnight.

Man attacks shop betting machine

An angry man trashed a gambling machine in a betting shop, a court has heard.

Furious Gareth Green, who gave his address as Alexandra Road in Lancaster, left betting firm William Hill with a £2,000 repair bill for the machine after attacking it.

Prosecutors said the incident unfolded in one of the firm’s outlets in Preston city centre on March 7 this year, Preston Magistrates’ Court was told.

Green later pleaded guilty to a charge of committing criminal damage.

The magistrates’ bench has ordered the 38-year-old defendant to pay the company £500 in compensation at a rate of £20 a month.

However the court did not impose a victim surcharge or costs due to his limited means.
