Pioneer returns to festival

Pioneering theatre director Robert Wilson returns to Manchester International Festival next week with a new theatrical production, The Old Woman.

Developed with and starring dancer and actor Mikhail Baryshnikov, and co-starring movie star Willem Dafoe, it is an adaptation of the work of the same name by Russian author, Daniil Kharms.

Carrying echoes of Beckett and Ionesco in its deadpan narrative, The Old Woman follows the story of a struggling writer who cannot find peace within himself.

It runs from Thursday to Sunday at Manchester Palace Theatre

Later in the month the venue hosts The Sofia National Ballet with a trio of ballet masterpieces – Don Quixote, Giselle and Swan Lake.

That’s followed by Momentous Musicals, starring Gareth Gates, following a sold out London performance in 2012.

Gates leads a cast of West End stars in a celebration of musical theatre.
