Fleeing Nazis with a huge cost

The award-winning drama Kindertransport comes to the Opera House, Manchester next week.

Since its London premiere in 1993, it has been seen worldwide and is now on many school curricula.

It’s a moving insight into the complex relationship between mothers and daughters.

In the nine months before the outbreak of World War Two, the Kindertransport ferried nearly 10,000, mainly Jewish, children from Germany and Austria to safety. Many would never see their parents again. Last year saw the 75th anniversary of the Kindertransport.

Maggie Steed (pictured) plays Lil, Janet Dibley is Evelyn, Emma Deegan is Helga, Paul Lancaster is Ratcatcher, Gabrielle Dempsey is Eva, Rosie Holden is Faith.

Steed is best known as Doreen in three BBC series of Jam and Jerusalem, and 36 episodes of BBC’s Born & Bred, while Janet Dibley has appeared in BBC’s Doctors, Eastenders and The Two of Us.
