Eat, drink, prey on the moor

The rugged and dramatic landscape of the United Utilities Bowland Estate is home to some fantastic wildlife and now the water company has joined forces with the RSPB to host a series of moorland ‘safaris’.

Over the next four months, there will be a series of walks, led by the RSPB’s Jude Lane, to uncover the special moorland wildlife that makes Bowland their home during spring and summer months.

Jude says: “I love working in Bowland and it’s great have the chance to show people what makes this area so 
special.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to see the elusive ring ouzel, which comes from Northern Africa to breed on the moorland plateau, and the tiger beetle, an insect famous for its ability to run at high speeds.”

“Soaring above the moor, we may also be able to spot charismatic birds of prey such as peregrines, above, kestrels and buzzards.

“If we are really lucky we may even spot a hen harrier, England’s most threatened bird of prey and the emblem of the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.”

The next guided walk of the season is on April 12, they are then also on May 5, 16; June 7, 27 and July 4.

All the walks are five miles and begin at 9.30am. Tickets cost £5 and must be booked in advance by contacting Fariha Quraishi on 01524 581001 or at fariha.quraishi​@rspb.org.uk

All money raised will fund the conservation of hen harriers in Northern England.
