He has amassed an impressive list of accolades and awards on both sides of the Atlantic – including a Mercury Music Prize nomination, two UMA Awards and MOBO awards for best Jazz Act in 2003 and 2007.

His new album ‘Legend of Mike Smith’ draws on Dante and The Seven Deadly sins, telling the tale of a young MC caught in a very modern world of temptation.

Soweto said: “I’m really excited about these shows (for Legend of Mike Smith), the stripped trio format allows me more harmonic freedom and space to deliver lyrics.

“Moreover, I’m excited about integrating new things into the show, such as tenor sax and live looping.”

It’s the second time Soweto Kinch has come to the Hothouse, he was also there in 2011 alongside Goldie for the BBC 1 music show ‘By Royal Appointment’.

Support for the gig comes from Lancaster-based 10 piece jazz collective The Initiative, who recently performed at Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

On Sunday, June 8 from 11am to 5pm at the Hothouse, Soweto will lead a creative music workshop alongside More Music’s Creative Director Pete Moser.

Aimed at musicians, music teachers and facilitators with a passion for education, the workshop will work on the blues, jazz and hip hop improvisation and composition while also concentrating on building confidence and losing inhibitions.
