Salty fisher folk and maritime merriment

Fleetwood's rich maritime heritage is being celebrated this weekend with a festival of salty folk music.

The event starts today when there will be free guided tours of the Fleetwood heritage vessel Jacinta from 11am to 4pm. An evening concert aboard the ship takes place between 7.30pm and 10pm with MC Alan Bell introducing Tony Gibbons and Kate Bradbury, Anna Shannon and Stanley Accrington.

Tomorrow sees a session at the museum entitled Songs of the Sea from 11am to noon. Then from 1pm-2pm, the same venue will see Fish & Ships, with songs, stories and pictures from Fleetwood’s fishing heyday by Dave Pearce and Dick Gillingham.

The North Euston Hotel ballroom plays host to the return of Cork Jackets & Drill from 3.10pm to 4.30pm, a story with original music from Len Pentin, performed by Chris and Siobhan Nelson, Clive Pownceby, Peter Rimmer, Colin Wayte and Len himself. Admission is £8, £6 concessions. There will be a free screening of a DVD about Fleetwood’s fishing heritage at the hotel at 5pm and a Maritime Concert from 7.30pm compered by Dave Jones.
