I am talking about the new BackBeat pro headset from California based Plantronics, and for me they are the best set of cans I have reviewed to date.

The BackBeat pro Headset are noise cancelling Bluetooth headphones and come nicely packaged. I recently reviewed the excellent BackBeat Go 2 earbuds (which I still use) and Plantronics have taken the leap up to full over the ear phones and these really are the dogs doobries.

OK so what do you get in the box for starters? There`s the headset, a Usb cable (for charging) a standard 3.5 cable with a mic for connecting to a device and a nice bag to carry everything in.

The BackBeat pro headset is much understated design wise, being all black with a hint of chrome, adjustment is easy and they fit really comfortably, the padding on the headband and ear pieces make for a snug and comfortable fit. I have been wearing these for long periods of time with no discomfort.

The controls are situated on both ear cups and the great thing is they are uncomplicated and easy to use, on the right is a ring that controls the volume and a large button for answering the phone. On the left is the start/pause button and a ring for track selection. The on/off switch is situated at the back of the right ear piece and on the left side is the ANC (Active Noise Cancellation on/off) switch. There is also a power light on the right ear cup which tells you the amount of charge available.

Now the big thing about these is the amount of charge the built in batteries will hold, if you are familiar with wireless headsets you will be aware that the problem has always been having to charge them up after a few hours, well not with these babies they hold a charge for 24 hours (60 if you turn off the ANC) and I can verify this as I have been using them for over a week and still haven`t charged them up yet. As with the backbeat Go2 headset there is a reassuring voice that lets you know your connection status and level of charge every time you put them on.

Connection is flawless and the headset connects via Bluetooth to two different devices, I had this connected to my phone and tablet and when the phone rings it effortlessly switches over so you can answer, range is around 100 meters but that depends on the quality of your device really and I found the signal dropped whilst moving around the house.

Sound quality is excellent, there is a difference in quality when you have the noise cancelling on but it`s not that much of a problem really. The microphone mute button is situated at the bottom of the right ear cup and the inputs for the jack and charger are on the left ear cup.

Active Noise cancellation (ANC) uses exterior microphones to measure the external noise and cancel it out and it does work well, OK it’s not total but it does the trick.

I tested the ANC at a friend’s saw mill where the noise levels were high and I was very impressed by the amount of noise they cancelled out.

Build quality is excellent and for the price £249.00 they aren`t cheap, but they have more features and sound better than other headsets of that price range.

Summary

The BackBeat pro headset is by far the best headset I have ever reviewed and is in my opinion a real contender against the likes of Dr Dre`s and Sennheiser they are better built have more features and they look great.

If you are thinking of getting a serious headset then these are for you, don`t be put off by the price these are excellent headphones and have more to offer than anything else in this price range.
