Southport 2 Morecambe 1: Shrimps’ recent run of wins comes to an end
Morecambe were back in action at Southport on Tuesday.
Former Morecambe striker Dan Ogwuru hurt his former club with a late winner as the Shrimps’ recent run of form came to an end at Southport on Tuesday, writes DEREK QUINN.
After three successive National League North wins, Adam Lakeland’s side came into the game full of confidence but they failed to reach their recent heights and were undone by a scrappy winner.
Lakeland made two changes from the side that beat Buxton with Lewis Leigh and Isaac Buckley-Ricketts making starts in place of the injured Paul Lewis and Teddy Collis, who dropped to the bench.
Morecambe started brightly with Matty Daly coming close to converting a Buckley-Ricketts cross and Leigh heading wide from a corner.
Southport produced their first moment of threat on 22 minutes, when Danny Lloyd played in Adam Moseley whose effort was superbly saved by Myles Boney.
The Shrimps’ keeper could not prevent the Sandgrounders going ahead two minutes later, however, when Moseley produced a neat finish.
Morecambe were fortunate not to go further behind on 38 minutes when another former Shrimp, Jordan Slew, rattled the crossbar with a long-range strike.
The visitors looked to step up their game after the break with Liam Hogan heading inches wide on 55 minutes.
Joe Garner also directed an effort straight at the keeper when he should have done better.
Jake Cain fired over and Collis saw an effort blocked before their pressure paid off with a superb goal from Elliot Newby, who cut inside and bent an effort into the top corner with nine minutes remaining.
With a comeback draw on the cards, the Shrimps dropped their guard and allowed Ogwuru the space to secure the points.
