Don Goodman thinks Preston North End would ‘gratefully accept’ any quality they can add to their squad from the free agent market.

Preston are struggling at the bottom of the table and Graham Alexander has had to deal with a string of injuries and suspensions to some of his most important players, severely depleting his options.

The January transfer window is still a long while off yet but North End could move to add to their squad beforehand by recruiting a free agent.

Clubs are able to register free agents outside of the transfer window as long as they have room in their 25-man squad, with Preston’s currently standing at 24. Players can also be de-registered from a squad if the EFL give approval.

EFL pundit Goodman believes it’s an avenue that should be explored as long as a good player can be signed.

“It's one of those things,” he told The Post, via Betway. “It's okay for us to say that he should look at the free agency market, but it depends on who's available.

“What we have to confess is that by Preston's own standards, they actually spent a fortune on transfers in the summer.

“But I guess they're struggling at both ends of the pitch. In Graham's three games, they've only scored 1 goal and they've conceded nine.

“So, I the reality is that, the right kind of help, if it's out there and accessible, would be gratefully accepted I would imagine.”

What Alexander said about signing a free agent

Alexander revealed in his press conference on Wednesday that the club had started ‘looking at’ who is available, but made it clear any signing would have to be fit enough to come in and make an immediate impact.

“Yeah, we've sort of spoke about that this week in particular actually,” the manager told The Post.

“Looking at who's potentially available, if they can come in and help us, potentially.

The problem you've got there is you're probably bringing in players who are not at the level fitness wise to help us in the short term.

"Unless they've been training with a team consistently or with the PFA and stuff like that.

"That's the information we're trying to find out right now."
