“We’re happy with what we’ve been given”: Morecambe boss has no complaints over next season’s budget

The new Morecambe manager is comfortable with the budget he has been given for his first season in charge of the Shrimps.

Morecambe manager Adam Lakeland is confident he has the necessary resources at his disposal as he looks to build a promotion-winning squad.

Having agreed a three-year deal in moving from FC Halifax Town at the end of April, Lakeland and his assistant, Sam Walker, take charge of a Shrimps team looking to bounce back from relegation to the National League North.

Speaking at last month’s fans’ forum, Lakeland said: “I think the budget we will start the season with is a competitive budget.

“It’s not the same level of budget I believe one or two teams in this league have had this season but I feel that the longer we work here, and if we can bring in some of the players that we're trying to attract, the ownership will recognise we know what we’re doing, that we’re not messing about and they will get behind us.

“We’re happy with what we’ve been given and we feel that it’s going to allow us to be right at the sharp end.

“I won’t be happy just making the play-offs, unless we win them, but I want to win the league.

“That’s going to be hard, there’s no guarantees, but what’s the point if I sit here and say we don’t want to win the league?

“South Shields will say the same when they’ve got a head start on us because they’ve had 12 months’ body of work, they’re a good team, they’ve nearly won the league.

“They’ve got to be the favourites and we’ve got to try and finish above them in my opinion.

“That’s going to be hard but that’s what we’re going to try to do and if we can’t achieve that, then we’ve got to try and go up through the play-offs.

“I think if we don’t achieve that, then I’ll feel like we’ve failed and I could be sat here in 12 months’ time with egg on my face but I want to win.

“I don’t want to be in the National League North for longer than one season, the whole reason why we came here is we believe that we can get you out first time.

“We’re under no illusions how hard that’s going to be because it’s a very tough division but that’s got to be the aim.”
