“We should all be encouraged by the last three results”: Morecambe get set for Southport test on Tuesday

Morecambe manager reflects on three consecutive wins ahead of Tuesday’s return to action.

Morecambe manager Adam Lakeland says his players are beginning to gain in ‘confidence and belief’ after picking up their third successive league win on Saturday, writes DEREK QUINN.

The Shrimps produced a superb second-half show to beat Buxton 4-0 and make it nine points from nine in progressing up the National League North table.

Lakeland said: “The confidence and the belief in the group is growing all the time, which coincides with good results.

“To win three games in a row is not easy in this league and we are on a little run of form which is great, but this is only the start and we are still right at the beginning of our journey.

“It’s a long time since this club has won three in a row, or won two home games in a row too, but we can’t be content with that.

“This league is about being consistent, it’s about churning out results and it is important that we focus on continuing that run of form now.

“It has also been nice to keep two clean sheets in a row too.

“I love a clean sheet because they are what help you win titles, because they give you a tremendous platform for victories and we have to keep that going.

“I don’t think we have defended badly all season, but it is an area I know we will get better at.

“The club has gone through a massive change and we are still early in the journey.

“We are still at that stage where I feel there is so much more to come from individuals and the team.

“Our focus now is on our next game, which it always will be. We can’t look too far ahead; we can’t lose sight of the fact we are early in the season and there are a lot of games to go.

“We should all be encouraged by the last three results, but we focus on the next game looking for another win.

“We have just started winning games and if we can continue to do that, while at the same time continuing to get better, that should make for us having quite a strong season.”

Next up for Morecambe is tonight’s trip to Southport (7.45pm).
