Spennymoor Town 2, Chorley 0: Former Magpies Urwin inspires Moors to win over old club

Goals from Danny Johnson and Junior Mondal secured all three points for the hosts, with former Magpie, Matt Urwin, producing an impressive display in goal to keep the Magpies at bay.

Andy Preece’s side created openings throughout the afternoon, with Callum Rowe striking the crossbar with a first-half header.

Captain Mike Calveley also came close after the break, meeting Max Hunt’s delivery with a powerful header, only for Urwin to produce an excellent save to turn the ball onto the crossbar.

The breakthrough arrived for Spennymoor on the hour mark. A long throw caused problems inside the Chorley penalty area, and after the visitors failed to clear their lines, the ball fell to substitute Johnson, who made an immediate impact by finishing from close range.

Chorley continued to search for a way back into the contest, but the hosts sealed the points four minutes from time.

George Cantrill drove forward from midfield before finding Mondal to his left, and the winger made no mistake, guiding his finish into the bottom corner.

It was a disappointing afternoon for Preece’s side, who will feel their efforts deserved at least a point after creating a number of promising chances.

Attentions now turn to next weekend’s return to the Grant Store Victory Park Stadium, where Chorley welcome Hereford.

Chorley: Oram, Moore, Hunt, Smith, Blakeman, Fielding (Horbury 85), Calveley, Rowe (M. Wilson 75), Whitehouse (Popoola 75), Bala (Cummins 85), Taylor. Subs not used: Stowell, Bird.
