Shrimps look for response after late Southport agony

Morecambe manager Adam Lakeland has warned his players they can not afford a repeat of the late naivety which cost them at Southport in midweek, writes Nazira Yusuf.

The National League North side head into tomorrow’s fixture against Brackley Town looking for a response after a dramatic, last-gasp 2-1 defeat against the Sandgrounders.

It was a defeat which brought their three-game winning run to an end and leaves them sitting 12th in the table with 10 points from their opening eight matches, having picked up three wins, one draw and four defeats so far.

It appeared Elliot Newby’s 81st minute strike would be enough to seal a point for the visitors after Adam Moseley had give Port a first-half lead.

However, the hosts took all the points when former Morecambe striker Dan Ogwuru tap home six minutes from time.

Manager Adam Lakeland admitted the manner of the defeat was a tough pill to swallow.

He told the club’s in-house media: “I thought we actually started the game quite well. Gifted them a corner and then we conceded a really soft goal from that corner. And then I felt we lost our way a little bit up till half time.

“We deservedly equalised. And I think our enthusiasm to go and try and win the game just meant we lost the ball high up the pitch. We committed a lot of bodies forward. We lost our structure behind the ball.

"And probably their only transition in that entire second half, we’ve conceded from and ultimately lost the game. And that’s very frustrating because I felt we deserved at least a point out of the game in the end.

With the winning run now a thing of the past, the focus turns to Saturday’s task against Brackley Town at home.

“We’ve just got to try and win the next game,” he added.

“The focus is always the next game. We always try to win it. We’re all incredibly disappointed that winning run of three games has come to an end.”
