Weight added to Preston North End takeover talk with management's latest comments
Amr Zedan has been linked with buying Preston North End
The last we heard Paul Heckingbottom hadn’t met or spoken with Mr Amr Zedan. Not directly, anyway; in recent weeks you’d be forgiven for thinking the US-born Saudi businessman was sat on the other side of the microphones and cameras.
Since January, takeover talk has loomed in the background for Preston North End and by no means gone away. Press conferences aren’t for everyone but certain lines, of late, will have stood out to anyone paying particular attention.
Both Heckingbottom, and assistant Stuart McCall, have gone about it in an admirably measured way. Neither have appeared fazed or worried, when recognising that new ownership could well result in a change of management staff.

If you were watching and listening in order to form judgements, you probably wouldn’t be overly impressed by panicking or pleading. What the pair have done is place their cards on the table. Added investment? We know it is needed. Middle of the road wages? Get us there and we back ourselves to take the next step.
These mini-pitches have been sprinkled in and and amongst the injury updates, season reflections and opposition analysis. When you’ve got success at this level on your CV and speak with the authenticity both do, it carries reasonable weight.
Heckingbottom took it up a notch on Saturday evening, when a question around progress this season - 10 more points - was met with a release of utter frustration and complete honesty around the January transfer window.
Some, understandably, may point towards the ‘club record’ fee spent on Callum Lang: a deal which always had red flags around it and looked a decent one for Portsmouth. There is still time on Lang’s side but impact this season was the big hope; five games was the result.
The attitude and approach to the window clearly hasn’t sat right with Heckingbottom - who had PNE fourth on January 4. The football/preston-north-end/preston-north-end-paul-heckingbottom-transfer-news-pnefc-7684464" title="Paul Heckingbottom releases January transfer window frustration as Preston North End's season draws to close">words he uttered will have struck a strong cord with supporters, many of whom have said similar for years and years.
This was another interesting play from the Preston chief. One of power, as he made his expectation of the club, and own ambition, crystal clear. A few days earlier, McCall revealed some of the players PNE tried to sign in the summer (this is what we’re after).
You cannot remember summer at Deepdale that wasn’t described as big, but there is more intrigue than ever around the upcoming one. Heckingbottom grinned as he stated there was information only he knew, and didn’t wish to share.
Nothing against the PNE boss, but grinning isn’t something he does an awful lot during a press conference. Therefore, a wry smile in response to a question around added investment and possibly moving for Alfie Devine felt somewhat significant.
False dawns in football, on and off the pitch, are pretty commonplace, so it’s wise to sit tight and not get carried away. That’s easier said than done, mind, when so much points towards major change, and you really aren’t used to stepping into the unknown.
