Out-on-loan Preston North End man suffers injury setback but League Two boss calms fears
He is with the League Two side for the season
Newport County are assessing an injury sustained by Preston North End loan man Noah Mawene.
The 19-year-old is at Rodney Parade for the 2024/25 campaign, in what is his first loan spell away from PNE. Mawene is on a professional contract at Deepdale until 2026 and manager Paul Heckingbottom felt Newport was an ideal opportunity for him.
He has made six appearances in League Two and a further two in the EFL Trophy, with five starts made for Nelson Jardim’s side. But, in last Friday night’s loss at Chesterfield, Mawene was forced off the pitch just eight minutes after coming on as a substitute. He pulled up chasing the ball.
On the injury, Jardim said: “We will have to assess. I don’t know how bad it is. I don’t think it’s a big problem. He’s been a little bit fatigued. This level is a bit different for him to the experience he’s had before, at under 21s, with the intensity. He’s been doing well for us, but we’ll assess and go from there.”
Mawene, who made seven appearances for PNE’s first team last season, had started to make an impact at County - according to Newport reporter Chris Kirwan. The League Two side sit 13th in the table, with 18 points on the board.
