The striker joined Reading on loan from Preston North End in January. His contract at Deepdale expires this summer and, upon signing for the Royals, appeared to say his goodbyes to PNE in the form of an Instagram post.

It was a strong start to life with the League One club for Keane, but he has endured more injury frustration since. Keane has two goals in 14 appearances, with those strikes coming in back-to-back games against Exeter and Northampton.

After the goal against the latter, though, he missed five of the next seven league games. Keane did return to action in early March but hasn’t featured in Reading’s last two games.

It appears he and fellow loan man, Ryan Nyambe - both of whom worked with boss Leam Richardson at Wigan Athletic - will be elsewhere next year.

"I wouldn't have thought so,” said Richardson, when asked if he thought the duo would be at Reading next season. "Both very good people, been really good around the dressing room, so we'll wish them well and see what happens."

Keane, 33, only played a couple of games for Preston this campaign with a calf injury keeping him sidelined until late-January. In the first year (2023/24) of his second stint at Deepdale, the front man top scored with 13 Championship goals.
