The forward’s contract at Deepdale expires this summer and he appears to have said his goodbyes, after sealing a temporary switch to the Royals - who sit ninth in the League One table. It is a move which sees Keane reunite with former Wigan Athletic boss, Leam Richardson.

Keane rejoined PNE in the summer of 2023 from the Latics, having previously spent time on loan at the club in 2015. He scored 13 league goals in his first season back at Preston, and went on to add 73 appearances to his North End tally. Across both spells, Keane netted 20 goals in 95 games.

Posting on Instagram after the move was announced, he said: ‘Thank you to @pnefcofficial for the last few years. A great club filled with brilliant people. Especially the PNE fans, a big thanks for your amazing support and wishing the club all the best in the future’.

Richardson said: “I’m delighted to get the acquisition of Will over the line. He’s a fantastic person. As player, and as person I know him well I know what he brings to the group. Will has a proven record of scoring goals in this division - and the one above - and will add plenty of quality to our frontline for the remainder of the season.”
