On Tuesday night, Chorley had to settle for a point at home to Curzon Ashton following the Magpies’ FA Cup heroics in the second-round triumph at League One club Peterborough last Saturday.

Trailing to a Craig Mahon stunner at Victory Park, Chorley got themselves level with Curzon through Mike Calveley.

Any hopes of pressing for a victory were frustrated when they were reduced to 10 men after Calveley was shown a second yellow card late on.

Cardwell was kept on the bench until the last 15 minutes but Vermiglio is hoping this will help the forward play a bigger part when the Magpies travel to take on Boston United on Saturday.

The frontman was instrumental in the cup win at Posh, after scoring in the first-round victory at Wigan Athletic, as he returns from a long-standing hamstring problem.

“Harry’s done ever so well – we just need to manage him properly,” said Vermiglio.

“In an ideal world you want to start Harry Cardwell in most games because he’s a threat in behind, he’s a threat in to feet, he’s a threat in the air.

“By the same token, he’s had a long-term injury – he’s had a hamstring problem, his calves have been a little bit tight, so we made the collective decision on Tuesday just to leave him out.

“It opened the door for Lewis Reilly, who I thought was very, very good, worked hard and was everything we wanted from him.”

Tomorrow will be a trip to a new venue
for Vermiglio’s men as they provide the opposition for Boston’s first game in their new Jakeman’s Community Stadium.

Sadly, due to the Pilgrims being in a tier three area, there will be no supporters present.

“They’ll be well up for it,” said the Magpies boss.

“Boston have assembled a strong side with the resources they’ve got over there, signed some really top, top players who have played at a much higher level.

“So there’s no tougher test at this moment than to go away to Boston, especially in the new ground.

“Our lads have shown again that they can compete, they can be strong against League One opposition and against some good sides in this league as well.”
