Chorley 1 Hereford 2: Magpies undone as their visitors claim a late victory

Late goal sees Chorley’s visitors leave with victory on Saturday.

Chorley were left frustrated after a late Hereford comeback condemned them to a 2-1 defeat at the Grant Store Victory Park Stadium, writes PETE TSCHEREWIK.

Elliot Taylor had given the Magpies the lead early in the second half, but substitute Cawley Cox struck twice to turn around the game and secure all three points for the visitors.

Andy Preece’s side had broken the deadlock in the 54th minute.

Steven Bala worked the ball out wide to Owen Devonport, whose excellent cross picked out Taylor at the far post to head home.

However, Hereford were level nine minutes later when Cox worked space on the edge of the area.

His effort took a wicked deflection off Jack Moore, leaving goalkeeper Jake Oram unable to prevent it from rolling into the opposite corner.

The visitors completed the turnaround in the 82nd minute, when fellow substitute Danny Waldron played a superb ball over the top and Cox made no mistake with his finish from inside the penalty area.

Chorley had opportunities of their own, with captain Mike Calveley seeing a close-range header brilliantly saved by Theo Richardson inside the opening 15 minutes.

The hosts continued to push for an equaliser late on, with substitute Anjola Popoola heading against the crossbar from close range in stoppage time.

Richardson also produced another excellent diving save to deny Bala.

Despite a spirited performance, the Magpies were unable to find a way through and must now turn their attention to Saturday’s FA Trophy round two tie with Buxton at Victory Park.

Chorley: Oram, Moore, Hunt, Smith (Cummins 88), Blakeman, Rowe (Whitehouse 88), Calveley, Bala, Wilson (Horbury 78), Taylor, Devonport (Popoola 74). Subs not used: Bird, Fielding.
