Discover LUSoM: Preston’s specialist sixth form for mathematics and science

The Lancaster University School of Mathematics (LUSoM) invites future mathematicians to discover a different sixth-form experience.
Young people with a passion for mathematics and the mathematical sciences are being invited to discover a different approach to A-level study at LUSoM in Preston.
In just four years, LUSoM has established itself as one of the country’s leading sixth-form providers, recently being ranked fifth in The Times’ state sixth-form college league table.
The specialist school, which is open to students aged 16 to 19, brings together young people who enjoy mathematics, science and problem-solving. It offers a challenging and intellectually stimulating curriculum, supported by high-quality resources, specialist teaching and state-of-the-art facilities.

For many able mathematicians and scientists, being naturally gifted in these subjects can sometimes make them feel different from their peers. At LUSoM, students learn alongside others who share their enthusiasm, creating a vibrant community where curiosity, collaboration and ambition are encouraged.
The curriculum goes beyond the standard A-level syllabus, allowing students to explore mathematical ideas in greater depth and see how their learning can be applied in the real world. An extensive enrichment programme also helps students develop wider skills, including teamwork, communication, independent thinking and problem-solving.
Every LUSoM student studies Mathematics and Further Mathematics, alongside a choice of Chemistry, Computer Science or Physics. Students can also choose to take a fourth subject through Cardinal Newman College.

University and industry links
A key feature of the LUSoM experience is its close partnership with Lancaster University. Students take part in curriculum activities with university academics, giving them an insight into degree-level study, research and the opportunities available through higher education.
Industry experts also contribute to students’ learning, helping them understand how mathematics can lead to careers in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).
With the county positioning itself as the cyber hub of the UK, we need more good mathematicians than ever before. In our state-of-the-art facilities, we can help inspire the next generation of mathematicians and scientists across Lancashire.
Record-breaking results
In 2026, LUSoM celebrated a record number of A* grades, with one-third of all A-level results awarded the top grade.
The results enabled students to progress to leading universities and secure highly competitive degree apprenticeships with employers including BAE Systems and Rolls-Royce.
The school also celebrated its female students outperforming male students, bucking the national trend.
Mr Tiltman said: “It is testament to the different type of teaching we offer at LUSoM. Our focus on teamwork, collaboration and project-based learning helps students develop the skills they will need when they progress into higher education and the workplace.”
