Given the fact that anyone born in 1949 would now be approaching 77 years old, it’s safe to say that these retro archive pictures reflect a Preston which very few people will have tangible memories of. But they are fascinating!

12. The Anglers Inn, Pole Street, Preston 1949 The well known Preston brewer Matthew Brown lived here in the early part of the 19th century, his brewery being on the opposite side of the street. The firm's annual meeting was always held in the building. Matthew Brown started brewing and selling beer from a nearby shop in Pole Street, in 1830. Following incorporation in 1875, the company began to purchase retail properties and expanded, in particular by the acquisition of a number of brewery companies and their licensed houses in the first quarter of this century. In 1918 the firm entered the wine trade with the acquisition of Thornton & France Limited. A major development was the purchase of Nuttall & Co (Blackburn) Limited in 1927. This brought a tied estate of 172 public houses and the Lion Brewery in Blackburn. The old Pole Street Brewery was running at capacity and could not be expanded so production was moved from Preston to Blackburn. Matthew Brown was finally bought out in October 1987 by Scottish and Newcastle Breweries Plc.
