Plans to build two new all weather tennis courts at Broughton and District Club took a step forward last week.

The initial plans - also inclusive of 2.75m high perimeter fencing and gates and six 10m high lighting towers - were already approved in 2016 but ahead of the development starting, a variatian is now sought.

Last week, Preston City Council received an application seeking to vary condition 5 of the 2016 plans which stated that the tennis courts would have a green surface.

Instead, Broughton and District Club asks this restriction to be removed “to allow the installation of more modern and widely used tennis court finishes”.

In particular, they wish the tennis courts to have blue acrylic playing surfaces and artificial red clay systems.

They explain that blue and red “provide improved visual contrast with the yellow tennis ball, enhancing visibility for players and spectators” and “can also improve playing conditions under both natural daylight and artificial lighting”.

They confirm that these changes will not alter the size, layout, lighting, or operation of the approved development and would therefore have “no material impact on neighbouring amenity, the character of the area, or the overall planning acceptability of the tennis courts”.
