Will the weather improve in Lancashire this Mother's Day weekend after 70mph gusts and Met Office warning

Lancashire could see brighter conditions this weekend after strong winds of up to 70mph and heavy rain battered the county under a Met Office weather warning.

A yellow weather warning for wind is in place across the whole of Lancashire until 8pm on Thursday (March 12), with forecasters warning that gusts of 50 to 55mph are expected widely.

Some coastal areas and locations downwind of high ground could see stronger gusts of 60mph or even 70mph, according to the Met Office.

The warning says some transport disruption is possible, although the overall impact is expected to be low.

A statement on the Met Office website said: “Strong winds are expected during Thursday associated with an active weather front moving southeastwards across the UK.

“Gusts of 50-55mph are expected widely, with some coastal locations and areas downwind of high ground seeing gusts of 60mph or even 70mph in a few places. Winds will ease from the north through the day.”

Colder conditions to follow

After Thursday’s wet and windy weather, forecasters say conditions will turn much colder overnight, with clearer skies developing and patchy frost possible.

There could also be a few wintry showers overnight, with temperatures dropping to around 1C.

Friday is expected to be colder and blustery, with some bright spells but also frequent showers, which could fall as snow on hills. Temperatures are forecast to reach highs of around 8C.

Weekend outlook for Mother’s Day

The outlook for the weekend suggests some improvement in conditions heading into Mother’s Day on Sunday (March 15).

Saturday is expected to start frosty in places, followed by bright spells and scattered showers, with temperatures reaching around 9C.

Sunday is currently forecast to be changeable with occasional rain, although temperatures will be slightly milder at around 10C.

Looking further ahead, Monday is expected to bring sunny intervals and similar temperatures, although it could remain windy at times.
