Labrador breeder Jeremy Hunt and his wife Anita were contacted several weeks ago by the Korean TV company KBNE who were planning a visit to the UK to film some of the country’s top working dogs.

The day’s filming of the Fenway Labradors, which took place by kind permission of Francis and Jenny Fitzherbert-Brockholes on the Claughton Hall Estate, will be part of a programme celebrating British pedigree dogs.

Korean TV producer Mr Jang said that more people in South Korea wanted to keep dogs as pets.

“Interest in all pedigree dogs is increasing in South Korea and because the UK is so well known for its wonderful dogs we wanted to make a programme about them,” said Mr Jang.

The day included watching the Fenway Labradors being trained for their job as working gundogs – and in particular their natural ability as water retrievers.

“The Labrador hails originally from Canada where it was a water retriever. It was the breeds’ natural ability as a swimmer that brought it to the UK almost 200 years ago, so we were able to show the Korean team how we train our dogs when we need them to retrieve birds from water during the shooting season,” said Jeremy Hunt, who has been breeding Labradors for more than 30 years.

His Fenway Labradors have been exported to many countries across the world, and although he has a waiting list for pups bound for Europe, the USA and even India, he hadn’t realised there was so much interest in the breed in South Korea.

Assisting in the filming was Simon Fitzherbert-Brockholes who brought along his Flatcoated Retrievers. These work as part of the picking-up team during the shooting season on the Claughton Hall Estate. Simon was also interviewed for the programme.

Jeremy and Anita say their aim is: “to produce Labrador Retrievers that not only have a natural ability to work but Labradors that retain the true looks and

temperament of the breed.”
